Yes, Nutrition Really IS That Important

Yes, Nutrition Really IS That Important

We’ve all heard the sayings:

“You can’t out-train a bad diet”
“Nutrition is 80% of the solution”
“Our food should be our medicine and our medicine should be our food.”

It seems that if you’re going to discuss health and wellness, nutrition is a ‘must have’ in that conversation. I’m sure you’ve heard by now that the real magic happens in the kitchen.

But what does that even mean?

Well, In order to genuinely transform your health, you must refine your eating habits. Below are 3 vital reasons why nutrition is so important:

1. Good nutrition slows down the aging process.

It’s no secret that one can mitigate the natural effects of getting older with proper eating, but not many know exactly how important nutrition is for “aging gracefully.” This goes beyond the cosmetic and into the physiological. Foods rich in antioxidants like dark berries, dark leafy greens, and dark chocolate (yes, dark chocolate) aid in the anti-aging process by protecting the body from cell-damaging free-radicals. This affects everything from your skin to your internal organs to your brain function. Minerals like calcium are vital for functions such as muscle contraction, hormone regulation, and proper nerve messaging. In fact, the older you get, the more imperative good nutrition becomes in preventing age-related disease and cognitive decline!

2. It’s expensive to NOT be healthy.

A common excuse that is often used to justify not eating healthily is the relatively high cost of “health” foods compared to more easily-accessible processed foods. However, in the long run, nutrition is definitely a worthy investment. Chronic diseases such as diabetes and heart disease can cost a person over a million dollars in their lifetime and are entirely preventable (and treatable!) with proper nutrition. Additionally, those with poor diets often report getting sick more often than those who watch what they eat, due to compromised immune systems. This means taking more sick days at work which can affect everything from your paycheck to your promotion eligibility.

3. Eating well improves energy levels and overall well being.

There is an undeniable link between a person’s nutrition and their overall feeling of wellness. Balance, energy, and contentment all come from within, and how you fuel your body has an impact on all of that. No matter what age group or pre-existing condition, increasing fruit and vegetable intake while cutting down on processed sugars, salts, and fats can be beneficial to anyone.
