The Second Component of Physical Fitness: Power

Today we are introducing part 2 of the 7-part segment about the components of physical fitness. Part 2 includes Power. By definition: "Power is the ability to exert maximum muscular contraction instantly in an explosive burst of movements."

Power exercises are often movements that require the use of multiple large muscle groups, making them full body workouts. Some examples of these exercises are the power clean and snatch. Power is extremely important in sport activities that require high velocity movements like throwing, kicking, or jumping. Almost all athletic teams, amateur or professional, incorporate some sort of power exercises into their workout regime. 


Most of us aren’t professional athletes so power exercises may seem irrelevant because we are not out on the field jumping, kicking, and throwing. But, power is still important! Have you ever tried lifting a heavy box off the ground? That required power. That lift required the use of multiple muscle groups in one explosive movement from the ground up. We recommend that everyone should try to increase their power output. 


We know power lifting may seem intimidating but as Aaron, one of our trainers advises, the biggest hurdle is taking the first step and just getting started. Aaron: “it is important to have someone who is knowledgeable about power lifting to provide guidance with the technical aspects.” As a competitive power lift with over 7 years of experience, he really enjoys this type of training and recommends taking your time and being extra safe. “Power lifting can have its challenges but it is also an extremely rewarding practice.”
